Making Sure Your Dream Job Is a Perfect Fit

By Guest Blogger: Diane Ruth Mackay

Before you start chasing your dream job, you need to make sure it is the right fit for you. Although this sounds simple, it is amazing how many times we chase the wrong dream.

First of all, you need to understand that different people suit different jobs and employers. This means that you need to take a good look at yourself and at your market (job market that employs people with your type of skills, education and abilities). Knowing yourself and looking at the potential jobs out there will help you find the best job/employer fit.

You can start getting to know yourself by taking personality tests. There are many different kinds out there, but take several in order to get the best results. Each one will tell you things about yourself, some that you will immediately recognize and some that may surprise you.

Talk to people who know you well. You may be surprised at their perception of your abilities and strengths, and if you are brave enough to ask for areas you need improvement in that can be invaluable information.

Aptitude tests are another area that can help identify jobs you may excel at. Certain traits may point you in a direction you hadn't thought of before. Career testing can also lead you to examine jobs that didn't know existed and help you focus your efforts in specific areas. Keep in mind that regardless of your aptitude in a certain area, the job has to interest you in order to make a good fit. Take some time to reflect on your passions and keen interests, and see where work with your particular skill sets to find the perfect career position.

When looking at different jobs, it is critical to understand what the work requirements are and match that to your ideal work-life balance. This is where knowing yourself and identifying what stage of life you are at will help you make the right choices. Some people feel energized and focused when they are under pressure and strict deadlines. For others, this is stressful and they cannot perform well when asked to work like this. Financial and time considerations may play a part depending on your circumstances. You may prefer a part time job with a high degree of flexibility, or need a full time job with set days and hours of work. Knowing this about yourself will assist you in evaluating jobs and matching them to your preferred lifestyle.

In the end, happiness is the primary goal of finding your dream job. If the work you do makes you happy and meets your needs, then you have indeed made the right choices.
